HelpAge Canada was founded in 1975 under the name Help the Aged (Canada) by a group of volunteers who were concerned that no Canadian charitable organization represented the interests and needs of older persons in Canada and in the developing world. We remain the only Canadian organization exclusively dedicated to helping older persons in Canada and abroad.
We support older Canadians from coast to coast to coast, particularly those who are underprivileged, marginalized, or struggling with loneliness and isolation. Working alongside a network of community-based senior serving organizations, our initiatives empower older Canadians to age in place by providing the social and practical supports they need to do so. HelpAge Canada serves as a champion to the community-based senior services (CBSS) sector, offering our knowledge, expertise, and connections to on-the-ground organizations who are working hard to meet the needs of older persons in their communities. As a thought-leader in the sector, we bring the challenges and triumphs of these organizations and the individuals they serve to the forefront of the public’s attention, as we strive to foster a society where all older persons have a voice and a choice in the places they live.
As a founding member of HelpAge International, we work alongside the HelpAge Global Network to respond to the needs of older people in developing countries; we support on-the-ground organizations in Dominica, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Kenya, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Ukraine. Our Sponsor a Grandparent program provides for the everyday needs of older adults in six countries, while our Emergency Relief initiatives respond to crises such as natural disasters and conflicts.
